Ziel der Kampagne ist es, die Städte Nordrhein-Westfalens für den internationalen Wettbewerb in Zeiten des demographischen und strukturellen Wandels zu stärken und für die Bewohner der Region mehr Lebensqualität zu erreichen.

SEHEN LERNEN besteht aus drei Bausteinen: dem digitalen BAUKULTUR ABC im Internet, der mobilen SEHSTATION in Städten des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen sowie Broschüren und Faltblättern für interessierte Bewohner, Kinder und Jugendliche.

Die Kampagne will die Öffentlichkeit für die gebaute Umwelt sensibilisieren und die Bevölkerung stärker für die Belange der Baukultur gewinnen.

People tend not to show much interest in their built environment, and take the roads, bridges, houses and squares of their towns and cities for granted. Unconsciously they may register qualities – or their absence – but they fail to appreciate or ask for more.

The SEHEN LERNEN (Seeing and Learning) campaign seeks to sensitise the general public to the built environment and awaken people’s interest in Baukultur and all that entails. It also aims to stimulate discussion with the inhabitants on the appearance of their towns and cities and to thus enhance the quality of life in the long run. This campaign is projected to run for several years and has four components: the photographic Internet platform BAUKULTUR ABC, the SEHSTATION (viewing station), brochures and leaflets for interested inhabitants, children and young people; and an additional poster campaign. SEHEN LERNEN was launched in 2008.
SEHEN LERNEN does not only aim to educate people’s visual perception. It is also concerned with showing interested inhabitants that they can participate actively in shaping their own environment. So it will not lay down a law about what is beautiful and what is ugly. After all, for a building or an urban space to succeed, it must have more than just a pretty face.
